Junior right-hander hurls 10-inning gem in win over Canton

Chris Cutrone needed to put in a little overtime to secure his fourth win of the season and St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn’s fifth victory in six games.

The junior right-hander scattered eight hits over 10 – yes, 10! – brilliant innings Saturday in Patchogue, N.Y., hurling the Bears to a thrilling 2-1 victory over SUNY-Canton in the second game of a doubleheader.

Cutrone (4-1, 3.63 ERA) struck out five and walked two, holding the Roos (7-11) at bay until junior Thomas McKenna delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning, helping the Bears bounce back quickly from a tough 4-3 loss in the opener at the SJC Outdoor Complex.

Cutrone, who also singled in four at-bats, needed 123 pitches to finish off the complete-game gem. He was unlikely to take the hill again for the 11th inning if St. Joe’s hadn’t walked off with the impressive win.

For his efforts, Cutrone received the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) Player of the Week award, the second time this season he has been given the honor.

The Bears (11-7) will be back in action Wednesday at 4: 15 p.m, when they take on Staten Island College at MCU Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Lady Bears continued to rebound from an 0-8 start to the season Sunday, putting together 26 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep (9-4 and 7-3) of Lehman College to extend their season-high winning streak to three games.

Junior Jackie Perillo earned her first win of the season in the opener with seven solid innings and reigning HVIAC Pitcher of the Week Jamilynn McGowan followed suit in the nightcap with another complete-game effort.

But the real story for St. Joe’s was a prodigious offense which was spearheaded by Bishop Kearney product Kristin Ferrigno, who finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Perillo’s mound mastery was aided by her own prowess at the dish as she also contributed four hits to the sweep, scoring four runs and driving in a pair.

The Lady Bears, who improved to a perfect 20-0 all-time against the Lightning, were scheduled to host Cedar Crest in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Over at Brooklyn College, the women’s softball team jumped over the .500 mark for the season with a doubleheader sweep (11-7 and 10-6) at SUNY-Old Westbury on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Arislenia Rodriguez’s three-run homer capped a six-run third inning in the opener for BC (11-9) while senior starter Amanda Bisz earned her second win of the year on the hill and also finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate.

In the nightcap, Rodriguez again highlighted a big frame by delivering a two-run single during a six-run fourth inning as the Bulldogs flew out to a 10-2 lead before rain forced the game to be shortened to five innings.

BC will be back at it Wednesday afternoon as it travels upstate to take on SUNY Purchase in a non-conference doubleheader.

A pair of LIU-Brooklyn baseball players received Northeast Conference honors this week as senior shortstop John Ziznewski was named the league’s Player of the Week while freshman hurler Bobby Maxwell took home a share of the Rookie of the Week award.

Ziznewski, a Staten Island native, helped the Blackbirds to a 3-2 week by hitting a blistering .611 (11-for-18) with two homers, two doubles, six runs scored and 11 RBIs to go with a pair of stolen bases.

Maxwell yielded one earned run on four hits in a complete-game victory over Wagner College and also fanned four batters in two innings of relief work against St. Peter’s.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander should see action against this weekend as LIU takes on Mount St. Mary’s in a four-game NEC series. But before that, the Blackbirds (14-11-1) will meet Iona in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon.

LIU has won seven of its last nine games overall.

Though they have yet to achieve the status of the perennial Final Four-contending men’s team, the St. Francis women’s water polo squad performed well in splitting a pair of matches over the weekend.

The Terriers pulled out a 16-15 victory over Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon before falling to Gannon by an identical score

Junior Bernadett Laszlo scored with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation to give St. Francis (4-15) a narrow victory against the Falcons.

Freshman Stephanie Zwicker and sophomore Juliette Khalil scored five goals apiece in the victory while first-year netminder Marti Grois made seven saves.

Sophomore Palmer Hardy scored a match-high five goals and Khalil added three more tallies in the loss to Gannon, which ran out to an early 6-2 lead and never looked back.
