The Greek community was out in full force this past Wednesday March 26to celebrate their heritage and Greece’s’ 193rd Independence Day at Borough Hall, where Borough President Eric Adams and Deputy Borough President Diana Reyna hosted the Hellenic community of Brooklyn.Adams presented citations to several Greek community honorees and they were recognized by the representatives of both the Brooklyn and Hellenic community. The honorees included Stellene Argyriou, Antonio Bregianos, Tony Grigos, Nick Karkas, Jimmy Kokotas, Dimitrios Mallas, Joanna Vassilas, John Vorvolakos, Dennis and Steven Vourderis, and Peter Yiatrakis.Adams spoke about the importance of the Greek community not only as a part of Brooklyn but as a part of the nation. “As you listen to the lyrics of the national anthem, no one has personified the love of America more than the Greek community,” he noted.Along with awards being presented, the night was full of the rich traditions of Greece including a selection of Brooklyn’s Hellenic performance groups including the Greek school of Plato Dance Group, the Hellenic Classical Charter School of Dance, A Fantis Parochial School of SS Constantine and Helen Cathedral, and the Dimitrios and Georgia Kaloidies Parochial School. There was also a copious selection of Greek foods courtesy of numerous local eateries.
