Brooklyn Today for March 24
Good morning. Today is the 83rd day of the year. On March 24, 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on the case of Dr. Joseph Long of Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg, who at different times promised to wed two sisters. Both young women had babies by the doctor. Several letters read aloud in court revealed that Long had suggested to both women that they have abortions, which were strictly illegal at that time.
Well-known people who were born today include beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti (“Coney Island of the Mind”), pianist Byron Janis, costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie, football player Peyton Manning, Brooklyn-born actress Donna Pescow (“Saturday Night Fever,” “Angie”) and actress Annabella Sciorra (“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Jungle Fever”).
