Good morning. Today is the 73rd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of March 14, 1864, urged that Brooklyn’s top baseball teams (which were all amateur back then) establish affiliated “junior teams” from which to draw young talent.  “Junior Atlantics and Excelsiors [Brooklyn’s best-known teams at the time] would be far more successful than independent junior teams without known names,” according to the Eagle. “The seniors would have a corps in reserve from which they could draw young players when their older members got `played out.’” The Atlantics were later one of the first teams to go professional, in 1869.

Well-known people who were born today include former astronaut Frank Borman, actor Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”), U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), actor Billy Crystal (“When Harry Met Sally,” “City Slickers”), jazz and pop producer Quincy Jones and actress Rita Tushingham (“Dr. Zhivago,” “A Taste of Honey’).
