Brooklyn’s future legal minds participate in WWII Event

In recognition of Black History Month, students at Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology explored the topic of civil rights through a program offered by Optimum Power to Learn, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel.

Participating in the program were Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Smithsonian Channel Associate Curator Dr. Krewasky Salter. The program focused on the students’ exploration of the experiences of African-American GIs who helped rebuild Germany at the close of World War II and how, after experiencing equality for the first time overseas, these soldiers helped ignite the Civil Rights movement in the U.S.

Following welcoming remarks from Principal Dr. Anthony Prayor and Cablevision MC Devale Ellis, Borough President Adams spoke to students about how ordinary people can do extraordinary things to transform society for the better. Students viewed a clip of the Smithsonian Channel documentary, “Breath of Freedom.” which deals with this largely unknown chapter in American history and gave their presentations relating to this topic. The event closed with students participating in a Q&A with Smithsonian Channel’s Dr. Salter and Brooklyn Borough President Adams.

“I’d like to congratulate all of the participating students for their comprehensive and interesting presentations,” said Adams. “I am sure everyone here today will walk away with a better understanding of the civil rights movement and how World War II and its aftermath spurred these brave individuals on to become civil rights activists upon returning to the U.S.”
