Good morning. Today is the 63rd day of the year. On this day in 1847, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle printed then-Eagle editor Walt Whitman’s column on “An Hour in the Brooklyn Public Schools.” Whitman paid a visit to a school at Flushing and Classon avenues, considered “East Brooklyn” at the time. He commented favorably on the teachers’ engagement with the students and their method of teaching the students the meaning of history, geography, grammar and arithmetic, rather than just teaching by rote. Whitman named some of the “many bright boys in the classroom” and recommended that “the old system of whipping” be abolished. He apologized to his readers that he didn’t have time to visit one of the girls’ classrooms.

Well-known people who were born today include author Chaz Bono, musician Emilio Estefan, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, signer Mary Wilson (of the original Supremes) and actress Paula Prentiss.
