Nothing cures the winter doldrums better than a good comedy, and The Heights Players are ready to shake off winter with the madcap pace of Douglas Carter Beane’s sophisticated satire, “As Bees in Honey Drown.”

Beane, an American playwright and screenwriter, has penned many notable plays and screenplays, including “The Nance,” “The Little Dog Laughed” and “Sister Act — the Musical.” Well-known and highly praised, Beane won an Outer Critics Circle Award for “As Bees in Honey Drown” in 1997-’98.

Called a “delicious soufflé of satire” by The New York Times, “As Bees in Honey Drown” takes its audience on a ride with Evan Wyler, a twenty-something New York writer who is savoring the success of his debut novel. When the media pegs him as the “next hot young thing,” Alexa Vere de Vere, a black-clad woman of mystery, takes notice and becomes determined to have Wyler write the screenplay of her life story, for which she will pay cash. With that, Wyler is launched on a breathless roller-coaster ride through the upper stratosphere of the rich and famous. But suddenly, Alexa is gone, and so is the cash…

What truth will Evan ultimately find? As Alexa would say, “You’re not the person you were born – who wonderful is? You’re the person you were meant to be.”

“As Bees in Honey Drown” runs from Feb. 28 through March 16 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at 26 Willow Place in Brooklyn Heights. Tickets are $20 ($18 for seniors and under 18); for reservations call 718-237-2752 or visit www.heightsplayers.org.
