Good morning. Today is the 56th day of the year. When people think of lynchings, they usually think in terms of the Deep South. However, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Feb. 25, 1901, reported on a lynching in Matawan, N.J.. According to the Eagle, the town’s business section had been destroyed by fire several days beforehand, and residents believed the fire had been set deliberately. A crowd broke into the home of suspect Charles Herbert and strung him up outside a local barn. Several times, the rope was lowered to give him a chance to confess, and each time, he protested that he knew nothing about the fire. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed, and Herbert was taken to the county jail.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Sean Astin (the Lord of the Rings film trilogy), actress Rashida Jones (“The Office”), talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael, television journalist Bob Schieffer and actress Karen Grassie (“Little House on the Prairie”).
