New York City’s public schools are open but after-school sports and other activities have been canceled.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina said after-school activities would be canceled Thursday because of the snowstorm.

Schools in most nearby districts are closed Thursday. But Farina announced Wednesday night that New York City schools would be open.

Public school students in the city have had just one snow day so far this winter, Jan. 3.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew criticized the decision to open schools Thursday.

Mulgrew said the weather made it unsafe for students, parents and staff to get to school.
