In honor of Black History Month, Councilmember Alan Maisel is sponsoring an essay contest. Students are encouraged to write about an African American who has made a significant contribution to American life through involvement in government, science, medicine, education, literature, entertainment, business or the arts.

“As a former teacher, I know how important it is for children to understand our history,” explained Maisel, who formerly served in the state Assembly until being elected to the City Council this past November. “Each year I sponsor this essay contest, which encourages students to use their creativity in a positive way as they learn about people who have made significant contributions to our country. As we receive hundreds of responses, it’s clear that the students enjoy participating, as well.”

Essays must be submitted to Maisel’s office by March 3. A grand prize will be given to the winner. Each participant will receive a New York City Council Certificate. For additional information, contact Gail Fazio at 718.241.9330 or [email protected].
