Good morning. Today is the 38th day of the year. On this day in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that some of the more prominent members of the Montauk Club on Eighth Avenue in Park Slope were threatening to resign if a builder went through with his plans to build houses whose rear yards would “infringe on the privacy of the club.” The block was known as Sportsman’s Row because many of the homeowners owned and raced horses. The Montauk Club, whose buillding is now a landmark, still functions as a private social club, although its top floors have been converted to apartments.

Well-known people who were born today include country singer Garth Books, basketball player Steve Nash, Brooklyn-born actor Chris Rock, author Gay Talese (“The Kingdom and the Power,” “Unto the Sons”) and folksinger Oscar Brand.
