ALBANY— New York legislative leaders say education officials should delay for at least two years using Common Core-aligned tests for high-stakes decisions about teachers, principals or students.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, who chairs the education committee, issued a statement Tuesday citing “serious issues” with the state’s rollout of the more difficult Common Core learning standards.

Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos, co-leader Jeff Klein and Senate education chair John Flanagan expressed a similar sentiment in a separate statement. They said they support a delay “unless the Board of Regents acts to alleviate the concerns of parents, teachers and other educators.”

Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch and Education Commissioner John King Jr. responded by saying that a Regents work group that’s been reviewing implementation will make recommendations next week.
