Good morning. Today is the 23rd day of the year. On this day in 1899, the Brooklyn Superbas, later to become the Brooklyn Dodgers, obtained shortstop William Dahlen from the Chicago White Sox and William Dermont from the Baltimore Orioles. “Manager [William] Hanlon has been on the lookout to make one of his famous deals, and now he has succeeded in his purpose,” the Eagle wrote. The Baltimore Orioles were not the team we know today – these Orioles moved to New York in 1902 and eventually became the New York Yankees.

Well-known people who were born today include Princess Caroline of Monaco, actress Mariksa Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”), actress Jeanne Moreau (“Jules and Jim, “”Viva Maria”), singer-actress Chita Rivera (“The Kiss of the Spider Woman”) and U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Delaware).
