Good morning. Today is the 358th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Dec. 24, 1868, reported on Christmas in Brooklyn. “The supply of poultry is abundant,” the Eagle said, “the butchers have killed their fattest oxen and sheep and the confectioners display the most tantalizing delicacies in their windows. Those who have an abundance to spare should remember those less fortunate and cheer some poor family by sending them a turkey or a ton of coal.” The article also mentioned some of the Christmas music that was being performed at Brooklyn churches, from “Come All Ye Faithful” to the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah.” Even Santa Claus got into the act – he was scheduled to appear at the Williamsburgh Opera House.
Well-known people who were born today include author Mary Higgins Clark (“Where Are the Children?” “Silent Night”), singer-actor Ricky Martin (“Livin’ La Vida Loca”), U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) and TV host Ryan Seacrest (“American Idol”).
