Good morning. Today is the 351st day of the year. On this day in 1902, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, teachers at P.S. 17 on Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg saved the lives of 180 children by ordering them out of the school when they saw smoke rising from the floorboards. The school was in temporary quarters in a wooden-frame house, and wood-burning fireplaces were used to heat the rooms. “The frame structure is one of the oldest in the Eastern District [Williamsburg], and the people in the neighborhood have always regarded it as a firetrap,” the Eagle reported.

Well-known people who were born today include Pope Francis, British actor and musician Tommy Steele (“The Happiest Millionaire”), baseball player Chase Utley, actor Bernard Hill (“Great Expectations,” “Titanic”) and actor Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”).
