Two public spaces in Gravesend and Dyker Heights will have beautifully decorated Christmas trees – complete with hundreds of twinkling lights – after this week when ceremonies will take place to celebrate the holiday season.

State Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southern Brooklyn) will host ceremonies to light Christmas trees in Lady Deborah Moody Square in Gravesend and McKinley Park in Dyker Heights.

First up is the tree lighting at Lady Moody Square, which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 6:30 p.m. The square is located at Van Sicklen Street and Avenue U. Expect caroling, candy canes, hot chocolate and a special appearance by Santa Claus!

The following night, Wednesday, Dec. 11, Golden and Santa Claus will be at McKinley Park on Fort Hamilton Parkway at Bay Ridge Parkway at 6:30 p.m. to turn the switch to light the Christmas tree there.

Both events are sponsored by Golden in conjunction with the South West Brooklyn Parks Task Force and the Dyker Heights Civic Association.

“It has become a great tradition here in our community to join together to celebrate the holidays, and give thanks for all the good in our lives,” Golden said.

“I encourage neighbors, families and friends to take part in this year’s Christmas tree lightings and help us usher in this most magical time of the year.  No matter what you like best – hot chocolate, candy canes or singing Christmas Carols – a great time awaits you,” the senator promised.

Donations for the Toys for Tots campaign will be collected at the two events.

Visitors can also bring Christmas cards and gifts to be mailed to US troops serving overseas. The Dyker Heights Civic Association is the sponsor of the Dyker Heights Military Postal Fund, a program that pays for postage for families of military service members seeking to mail packages to their loved ones serving overseas. The packages are mailed from the Dyker Heights Post Office on 13th Avenue.

For a list of items to donate to our troops, call Golden’s office at 718-238-6044.
