A memorial for Nelson Mandela will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 1 p.m. in Brooklyn at The House of the Lord Church, 415 Atlantic Avenue.

The Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry, veteran pastor and civil rights activist, said, “We have arranged this memorial to coincide with the funeral arrangements in South Africa, which will start on Sunday, December 8, 2013 with prayer, and conclude on Sunday, December 15, 2013. We know that people everywhere want to come together and share their sadness, appreciation, and gratitude for the life of this extraordinary man.”

Rev. Daughtry was a member of Mayor David Dinkins’ delegation to South Africa in the early 1990s. He also served on the Welcoming Committee when Mr. Mandela visited New York in 1990.

Rev. Daughtry has interacted with Mr. Mandela on a number of occasions, which included a reception for Mr. Mandela at the White House during President William Clinton’s tenure, ceremonies at the Riverside Church and New York City Hall, etc. It was at the Reverend’s church that Mrs. Winnie Mandela made her first public speech in the U.S.A. during their visit.

Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry will provide the Keynote Address. Music will be provided by internationally renowned jazz artist, Mr. Randy Weston, and the Anointed Voices of The House of the Lord Church.
