Poll shows major support for NYC tax hike on richest

ALBANY— A new statewide poll shows 63 percent of voters support increasing New York City income taxes on households making more than $500,000 and using that money for public schools.

The Quinnipiac University poll indicates 81 percent support among Democrats, 61 percent among independents and 58 percent opposition among Republicans.

New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has proposed funding universal early education known as pre-kindergarten from the proceeds.

Quinnipiac Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll notes that Republicans who control the state Senate in a coalition with a handful of Democrats will have a lot to say about any increase.

The state Legislature would have to approve the tax hike.

The poll of 1,337 registered voters last Wednesday through Sunday has a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points.
