Good morning. Today is the 322nd day of the year. On this day in 1894, former Brooklyn policemen who had helped to suppress the 1863 Draft Riots held a reunion. Thirty-one years before, in the midst of the Civil War, a Brooklyn force of 200 officers marched from Fort Greene to Fulton Ferry Landing, then took the ferry to Manhattan to help New York City cops. The riots broke out in Manhattan among working-class New Yorkers, who resented President Abraham Lincoln’s decision to institute a wartime draft. The disturbances soon turned into a race riot, as the rioters began attacking, and in some cases killing, black people wherever they could.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Linda Evans (“Dynasty,” ‘The Big Valley’), Brooklyn-born actress Brenda Vaccaro (“The Goodbye People”), former baseball player Gary Sheffield, Hall of Fame football player Warren Moon and author Margaret Atwood (“Cat’s Eye,” “The Handmaid’s Tale”).
