Members of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce headed south for their annual meeting – gathering in Coney Island just about a year after the neighborhood was devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

“It was important for us to host our annual membership meeting and trade show in Coney Island this year,” Carlo Scissura, the chamber’s president and CEO, told his listeners over dinner at Gargiulo’s. “Over the past 12 months, coastal Brooklyn has worked hard to rebuild and it remains important that we support the local businesses that suffered damage.”

Among the highlights of the event were the introduction of a new website, www.explorebk.com, which will provide information about sights, shops, restaurants and hotels in the borough.

“Never before has a website aimed at collecting all this information in one place,” said Scissura. “We want to show visitors – whether they are from Manhattan, somewhere else in the region or beyond – that Brooklyn is a first-class visitor destination with some of the greatest sights and restaurants in the world.”

In addition, the winners of the first Made in Brooklyn competition were announced. They are Damascus Bakery (for Food), Raw Pothecary (for Beverages), Gotham Greens Farms (for Tech), Pensa (for Design) and Spoonable LLC (for M/WBE).
