Good morning. Today is the 304 day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 31, 1897, informed us that it was “Halloween, when indignation runs riot and faeries and goblins hold high revelry.” The article doesn’t mention trick-or-treating, which didn’t become popular on a nationwide basis until the 1940s. However, it does mention bonfires, costumes, and children playing “queer and fanciful games.” It also says that many people ate a “Halloween pill” made of coconut, almonds and cheese.

Well-known people who were born today include TV journalist Dan Rather, rapper Vanilla Ice, former astronaut Michael Collins, actor Steven Rea and actress Deidre Hall.
