Republican Joe Lhota is releasing the harshest ad yet in the New York City mayoral campaign, suggesting that crime will soar if Democrat Bill de Blasio is elected. The ad uses video of the recent biker gang attack that left several people injured.

The commercial released Wednesday also uses black-and-white footage of the crime-filled 1970s and ’80s. The images include an overturned police car and a man holding a gun.

Lhota suggested in a debate Tuesday that de Blasio would be unable to maintain the city’s crime drop that began under former mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

A de Blasio spokeswoman tweeted that the ad is “fear mongering.”

The election is Nov. 5. Polls show Lhota is trailing de Blasio by a wide margin.
