Good morning. Today is the 288th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 15, 1899, reported on battles in the Boer War in South Africa. The British were fighting the Boers, or Dutch settlers, to determine who would control the colony. Although the British eventually won, the Boers suffered many defeats, and this made Imperial Germany bolder in its efforts to rival Britain as a European power. Toward the end of the war, Britain was condemned for its policy of rounding up Boer civilians and putting them into concentration camps.

Well-known people who were born today include Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, singer Keyshia Cole, singer-musician Tito Jackson of the Jackson Five, actress and director Penny Marshall (“A League of Their Own,” ‘Laverne and Shirley”) and Hall of Fame baseball player Jim Palmer.
