Brooklyn Today for October 7

Good morning. Today is the 280th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 7, 1897, carried an article about a lecture by William Lloyd Garrison Jr., son of the famous American abolitionist, in Brooklyn. Garrison described how his father, originally a newspaper editor, became converted to the abolitionist cause in 1828. He was living in Baltimore at the time, and these views got him thrown into jail. In 1831, Garrison founded the Liberator, a publication devoted to the cause of abolition. He was hailed for his opposition to slavery, but when he began to advocate for women’s rights later on, his reception was lukewarm. Garrison dissolved the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1865.
