Public advocate runoff election takes place Tuesday

On Tuesday Democrats are voting in the runoff election primary for New York City public advocate.
Leticia James, (currently the City Council member representing the 35th Council District) and Daniel Squadron (currently state Senator) received the greatest number of votes in the September primary.
The runoff has been criticized for its high cost: $13 million for an office that controls roughly $2.3 million. But the position can be a powerful one: the public advocate is second in line should the mayor become sick or incapacitated, and the position is seen as a steppingstone for a future run for the Mayor’s office.
The tone of the campaign has turned negative as both candidates try to inspire their supporters to vote in what could be a low-turnout election.
