Can’t wait for the new season of “American Idol” to start in January? Well, there’s a talent contest here in Brooklyn that puts that show to shame.

The Seventh Annual Brooklyn Senior Idol contest, a talent showcase for people age 50 and up, will take place next month in Bay Ridge.

An audition will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road, from 4-6 p.m. Contestants trying out for this singing competition should bring a CD or cassette tape accompaniment.

A panel of judges at the audition will select contestants to compete on stage at the Brooklyn Senior Idol finals, set to take place on Saturday, October 5, at Xaverian High School, at 7 p.m.

The winner will be selected through the votes of the audience and the judges, according to state Sen. Marty Golden (R-c-Bay Ridge-southern Brooklyn), the contest’s sponsor.

Last year’s winner was Vincent Frisari. Frisani brought down the house with his stirring rendition of “Nessun Dorma.” With a powerful voice, Frisani performed the selection from Puccini’s opera “Turandot” to wild applause from the audience and the judges.

“Every year, Brooklyn’s Senior Idol attracts great talent and I am sure that this year will be the same,” Golden said.

“The show has become a very popular tradition, and each year, more and more fans show up to cheer on our contestants at the show. So if you can sing, be sure to try out. And if you want to see a great show, make plans to be with us on October 5,” Golden said.

Tickets for the finals are $10.00 and all money raised will benefit the Xaverian High School Music Department. For more information, call Golden’s office at 718-238-6044.
