Good morning. Today is the 260th day of the year. Police brutality is far from a new issue: The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Sept. 17, 1878, reported on charges against Police Officer Murtha (no first name given) of “using his [night]  stick too freely.” Apparently, a drunken boy was wandering around when Officer Murtha decided to take him into custody. At that moment, the boy’s sister arrived and offered to take the boy home. Officer Murtha’s response was to give both of them “a violent blow with his club.”

Well-known people who were born today include former basketball coach Phil Jackson, comedienne Rita Rudner, basketball player Rasheed Wallace, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter and U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa).
