Senior Idol auditions return on September 24

It’s back. This year marks Brooklyn’s seventh annual Senior Idol, the popular local singing competition for Brooklynites age 50 and over. Those who fit that description are invited to audition for the community-building event.

Auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 24 from 4-6 p.m. at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road (handicapped accessibility available at 71st Street door). Contestants should be accompanied with a CD or a cassette tape with their music and/or song.

Although the competition is typically a musical throwback to the golden ages, all genres are welcome, old and new.

A panel of judges will select over a dozen contestants to partake in the competition on October 5 at 7 p.m., also at Xaverian, in front of hundreds of family, friends and fans. The winner will be chosen through both audience voting and judge opinions. The grand prize is $500.

“Every year, Brooklyn’s Senior Idol attracts great talent and I am sure that this year will be the same,” said State Senator Marty Golden. “The show has become a very popular tradition, and each year, more and more fans show up to cheer on our contestants at the show.  So if you can sing, be sure to try out.”

Last year, 38 hopefuls entered the audition. In the end, Marine Park resident Vincent Frisari took home the crown with his amazing rendition of “Nessun Dorma,” from the opera “Turandot.”

Senior Idol was created by AARP chapter 5055 President Al Asfazadour and his wife Gail. They approached Loposky with their idea and a famous local tradition – now being carried on by Golden — was born.

Tickets for Senior Idol are $10 with proceeds going to the Xaverian Music Department.
