A federal judge has appointed the head of a nonprofit center for justice policy research to organize public meetings to ensure New York City’s stop-and-frisk policy is carried out in a constitutional manner.

Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin made the appointment Wednesday.

Nicholas Turner will organize town-hall type meetings including police personnel, community members, prosecutors and elected officials. Turner is president and director of the VERA Institute of Justice.

Scheindlin noted in an order that the Yale Law School graduate has managed a project on racial profiling in prosecution while at VERA. He’s also aided the racial and socioeconomics integration of post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans.

He’ll work with a monitor appointed last month when Scheindlin ruled aspects of the city’s policy were unconstitutional. The city is appealing that ruling.
