Hurricane Sandy’s floodwaters were thought to have claimed the century-plus-old Sunny’s Bar at 253 Conover Street, but its owners have reportedly announced that they will be returning on August 29, thanks to the financial help and enthusiasm of their customers and neighbors.

Meanwhile, popular and charmingly quirky antiques/handmade home decor shop Metal and Thread will be vacating its home at 398 Van Brunt Street, which owners Denise Carbonell and Derek Dominy have called home since 2007. The couple will be moving to Asheville, North Carolina, and continuing to operate Metal and Thread sales online through their website.

Explaining their decision, Carbonell and Dominy wrote on their Facebook page that they “will always miss the beauty of Red Hook,” but “recently heard from our insurance company that they will not be compensating our shop for any of our losses of inventory and tools from Sandy,” so although they have “tried to keep everything going through these difficult times financially, it simply is not possible. . . to continue.”

Metal and Thread’s basement workspace and storage space had been flooded with over four feet of water from Hurricane Sandy.
