City Councilman Michael Nelson, who is term-limited and cannot run for re-election, has made an endorsement in a council race – not the contest in his district, but in a neighboring community.

Nelson (D-Sheepshead Bay) recently announced that he is backing John Lisyanskiy in the Democratic Primary for the seat in the 47th Council District covering Coney Island, Gravesend, and parts of Bensonhurst. The district is located next door to Nelson’s.

Lisyanskiy, an aide to Council Speaker Christine Quinn, is one of four candidates seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination to run for the seat currently held by Democrat Domenic Recchia who, like Nelson, is term-limited.

“John Lisyanskiy has proven that he is prepared to address the struggles and challenges of the people in the 47th District as well as the greater Brooklyn area,” Nelson said.

“During my time in the council, I have witnessed firsthand where the gaps in leadership exist. Whether it’s his relentless commitment to rebuilding the shore communities ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, his dedication to our students’ success, or encouragement of economic development in our communities, John fully understands the needs of his district,” Nelson said.

“I am thrilled to have the backing of a close friend and councilmember, Mike Nelson,” Lisyanskiy said.

“Mike has been a tireless advocate for the rights of our city’s seniors, workers, veterans, and homeowners since he entered office over 10 years ago. He has certainly set a precedent within the council by unrelentingly showing his support for our City’s diverse communities, from co-sponsoring legislation to reduce rent for low-income seniors and the disabled, to pioneering the effort to “down-zone” Midwood and areas in Homecrest and Sheepshead Bay,” Lisyanskiy said.

Lisyanskiy is one of four candidates running in the Sept. 10 Democratic Primary. Mark Treyger, a New Utrecht High School teacher and Bensonhurst political activist, Todd Dobrin, a community activist, and Pastor Connis Mobley, pastor of United Community Baptist Mission Church in Coney Island, are also running. The winner of the primary will face Republican Andy Sullivan in the general election on Nov. 5.

In Nelson’s district, the 48th Council District, four Democrats are running in the primary – Theresa Scavo, chairman of Community Board 15; Igor Oberman, a lawyer and president of Trump Village West; Chaim Deutsch, president of the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol and a community liaison for Nelson; and Ari Kagan, Democratic district leader in the 45th Assembly District.

The winner will face Republican-Conservative David Storobin, a former state senator, in November.

Nelson has not made an endorsement in the race.
