Brooklyn Today for August 14

Good morning. Today is the 226th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Aug. 14, 1902, carried the unusual story of a 17-year-old young lady, Mamie McFadden of East New York, who went on an excursion boat with fellow members of a lodge but failed to return that evening. The next day, it turned out that she had gone out to a restaurant with several members of the crew, gotten drunk, and had been kept in a room aboard ship overnight. Left unsaid but implied was the possibility that one of more of them had had sex with her.
Well-known people who were born today include journalist Russell Baker, actress Halle Berry, singer-songwriter David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, singer-composer Buddy Greco, Hall of Fame basketball player Earvin “Magic” Johnson, cartoonist Gary Larson (“The Far Side”) and comedian Steve Martin (“L.A. Story,” “Roxanne,” “Parenthood”).
