Councilman David Greenfield is looking for local residents to join a new group he is forming to take care of a local park that has become a focal point of complaints from neighbors.

Greenfield recently met with community leaders to discuss problems at Gravesend Park, also known as 18th Avenue Park, and said one of the best ways to ensure the safety of residents is to have residents look after the park, located between 18th and 19th avenues and between 55th and 58th street. The goal is to prevent people from hanging out in the park after hours, a spokesman for Greenfield said.

The new group will be launched at a meeting inside the park’s main entrance on 18th Avenue and 56th Street on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. In the event of rain, the meeting will take place at Greenfield’s district office at 4424 16th Ave.

As Greenfield envisions it, the Friends of 18th Avenue Park would also be responsible for locking the gate each night to help deter vandalism and suspicious behavior at the park and serve as a sounding board for the community.

Despite the fact that the park is officially known as Gravesend Park, it is located in Borough Park, not Gravesend.

Greenfield said that since taking office, he has secured millions of dollars to improve Gravesend Park, including funding for new playgrounds and basketball and racquetball courts. Ensuring access to parks a top priority of his, he said, noting that there are a large number of families with young children in his council district.

“I have funded improvements in every single park in my district since taking office that will benefit families for years to come. I know that many community members share my passion for parks and my concern that the public’s investment in our local recreation areas is not ruined by illegal activity. That’s why I am forming the ‘Friends of 18th Avenue Park’ and asking residents to step up and get involved in their community,” Greenfield said.

Residents interested in joining the “Friends of 18th Avenue Park” should contact Greenfield at 718-853-2704 or email him at [email protected].

“Neighborhood parks are a vital aspect of any great community, and by working together we can make Gravesend Park one of the finest in New York City,” Greenfield said.
