Residents of East New York gathered at Grace Playground on July 24, to participate in a wellness day sponsored by a local organization.

The annual East New York Wellness Day event, put on by Brooklyn Community Services, through its East New York Family Center, provided hundreds of community residents with resources such as free health screenings, prevention information, and a blood drive.

There were plenty of refreshments, music, entertainment, exhibits, live demonstrations, and fun activities for children at the oasis at the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and Vermont Street. The event showcased East New York as a vibrant and viable community. It helped increase the community’s awareness of resources, programs and services that are available right in their own neighborhood.

This year’s Wellness Day included organizations and groups as diverse as East New York itself such as Ayiti Dous (Sweet Haiti), a Haitian dance group that performed during the event, and Mano a Mano, a Mexican cultural group. These groups came together with other local businesses and nonprofits for food, music, games, yoga and a talent show.
