Storobin secures 3 spots on election ballot

Let the Democrats fight it out! That appears to be the strategy employed by David Storobin, the lone Republican running for the City Council seat in the 48th Council District in southern Brooklyn.

While a crowded field of candidates fights it out for the right to be the Democratic candidate in the November election, Storobin is waiting in the wings raising money for his campaign.

Storobin has secured three ballot lines in the election: Republican, Conservative and Independence.

Democrats Theresa Scavo, Ari Kagan, Igor Oberman, Chaim Deutsch and Natraj Bhushan are running in the Sept. 10 primary. The winner will face Storobin in the general election in November.

Politicker reported in April that the council race could turn out to be heavily competitive, an anomaly in New York, a city that is heavily Democratic in terms of voer registration.

Storobin, a lawyer and former state senator, boasts that his fundraising has outpaced that of any of the Democrats in the field.

During the most recent filing period with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, Storobin raised $45,731. His next closest opponent, Theresa Scavo raised $30,991; Ari Kagan raised $23,110; Igor Oberman raised $11,915; Chaim Deutsch raised $5,045; and Natraj Bhushan raised $2,940.

“We got in this race a little late, so my opponents had a significant advantage in terms of raising money earlier in the year,” Storobin said. “But now that we’re off the ground, we’ve shown that this campaign can raise the money we need to win the election,” he said.

“Our campaign is now in high gear and we’re focused on victory in November,” Storobin said. “Since our kickoff last month, we’ve received a groundswell of support from people all over the district. My reform message is resonating with voters who want a candidate focused on promoting job growth, fighting crime, securing better education through school choice, and improving services for the people of Brooklyn,” he said.

Storobin said that as a state senator, he sponsored 42 bills to promote job growth, lower taxes, help small business, and improve education. His time in the state senate was short-lived. Storobin defeated Democrat Lew Fidler in a special election on June of 2012 to fill out the remainder of the term of disgraced senator Carl Kruger in the 27th Senate District. Kruger who was convicted of bribery. Storobin was defeated in the election in November of 2012 by Democrat Sincha Felderand was out of office by January of 2013.

The 48th Council District, which covers Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Midwood and Sheepshead Bay, is currently represented by Democrat Michael Nelson. Nelson cannot run for re-election because of the city’s term limits law.
