Again! Baby climbs out window and is saved by good samaritan

Baby alert! For the second time in two months in southwest Brooklyn, there was an incident involving a toddler who crawled out a second story window and nearly fell off a store awning.

The latest incident took place on July 26 on 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst, according to authorities, who said an 18-month-old baby girl climbed out the window of her family’s second floor apartment, onto a fire escape, and then crawled onto the awning of Tenda Tech Inc., a computer store at 8015 18th Ave. at around 2 p.m.

The baby was crawling around the awning, in plain sight of alarmed passersby.

Workers from Pure Health Pharmacy at 8014 18th Ave., located across the street from the computer store, ran over and lined the sidewalk directly under the awning to catch the child in case she fell. The workers also called police.

One of the workers ran into the apartment building and started banging on doors until he found the apartment where the baby’s mother lived, authorities said. The man climbed out the window himself and got to the baby. He got the child safety back into the apartment.

News 12 Brooklyn reported that the baby was unharmed by the misadventure. She was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was evaluated and released.

The baby’s mother, who had been cooking, was unaware that her child had crawled out the window.

The incident marked the second time in recent weeks a toddler caused people to hold their breath.

On June 19, Cristina Torre, the daughter of baseball great Joe Torre, caught a one-year-old baby boy after the child fell from a store awning at 9104 Third Ave., according to reports.

The baby had crawled out the window of the family’s apartment, crawled onto a fire escape, and then stepped down to a store awning, Viola said. The child’s parents were apparently sleeping when the incident took place, police said.

In a heart-stopping moment, the baby tumbled off the store awning. Torre, 44, who happened to be passing by on her way to work, not only saved the baby from falling to the ground, she called 911.

“There must be something in the Torre DNA that enabled her to make such a great catch!” Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) said at the time. Joe Torre, who managed the New York Yankees to several World Series Championships, started his baseball career as a catcher.
