New York Law School will be providing their graduates with a bit of relief this July bar exam season: a free lunch.

The majority of New York State bar exam takers sit of the test at the massive Javits Center on the far West Side of Manhattan on 11th Avenue between 34th and 40th streets. Each day of the two-day test is approximately six-and-a half hours long with an hour for lunch — the closest selection for lunchtime meals being three avenues away on 8th Avenue.  Exam takers have often griped about the lack of lunch options and the difficulty of leaving the Javits Center in search of food, eating, and returning to resume the test all within an hour.

NYLS has prepared a solution to at least one of the problems graduates face during the bar exam and will be providing their graduates with lunch. NYLS is dispensing box lunches, turkey sandwiches and veggie wraps prepared by CenterPlate, the exclusive caterer for the Javits Center, to the 250 graduates sitting for the bar exam.  “Taking the bar exam is one of the most intense and rigorous experiences of a lawyer’s career,” said NYLS Dean Anthony Crowell. “ Lunch on exam days, a first for New York Law School, is an example of the school’s renewed commitment to helping our graduates successfully advance from law student to lawyer and sustaining them through the process in ways that go beyond their classroom and clinical education.”

In addition to a sandwich or wrap, each box lunch will contain snacks and there will be plenty of fruit, water, coffee and tea, and earplugs to help keep the students energized and focused.
