While the temperature hovered in the high 90s during the day and evening, for the first of four planned Bay Ridge Summer Strolls, it didn’t apparently discourage area residents from coming out to what turned out to be awell-attended and enjoyablebig summer evening event.

It had a little bit of everything! Inna Trinidad’s Kaleidoscope Toy Store sponsored a hula hoop contest. The Art Room storefront studio had fun and games for the small fry.Ragamuffin Parade Committee members were ballyhooing the October 5 parade and talking about their new web siteand updated Facebook page. We sawCommunity Board 10’s Bob HuDock strumming a guitar with a group calledthe Band of Others.

The Bay Ridge Historical Society had one of themost popularattractions. Not only were they projecting vintage photos of old Bay Ridge ona large screen,General George Washington resplendent in his dress blue and white uniform, and his wife, Martha, in colonial garbwere on-handfor strollers towalk up and takefree pictures withthe famous couple from the American Revolutionary era.

The re-enactors were actually Mike Grillo and his wife, Maria.Mike is a museum educator and Maria is a school teacher. Both are residents of Bay Ridge. They brought along their son, Michael, wearing a three-corner hat and carrying a small toy drum.

The society also raffled offa copy of its latest publication, the book Bay Ridge, Etc.Peter Scarpa and this writer.Society officers greeting people and helping to pump up interest in the society were President Andrew GounardesJerry HoffmanMatt Scarpa and Treasurer Peter Scarpa.

Aspassersby viewed the projected photos, you would often see them point to the screen and then motion to a friend or family member about a particular site or local landmark beingshown.

One of the photos that drewa lot of attention was a photo of the Crescent Athletic Club Boathouse.Theelaborate boathouse and docking facility were in the waters just off Shore Road and 83rd Street long before the Belt Parkway was built. The Crescent AC back in its heyday wasthe social and sports club of the rich and famous! The country club itself was on the sprawling grounds of the present day Fort Hamilton High School and Athletic Field.
