Extra trash pickup is twice as nice

Good news for Ridgeites and Bensonhurstians.

Thanks to negotiations between City Hall and Councilmembers Vincent Gentile and Domenic Recchia, there will be second garbage pickup at trash receptacles along commercial strips in Council District 43. This means that four days a week, the baskets will be emptied twice a day.

The Department of Sanitation will resume the extra pickups effective immediately at baskets along Third Avenue, 13th Avenue, parts of Fifth Avenue outside the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District and Bay Ridge Avenue.

This has been a summer of big wins for our community, Gentile said. Im pleased to announce that I have successfully brokered a deal to bring back second basket garbage pick-ups four days a week along some of our busiest commercial thoroughfares across Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst.

Department of Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said that he was pleased to partner with Gentile on the effort.

I applaud Councilman Gentile for his continuing support of the department and for helping us keep New York City clean, especially by arranging for extra litter basket pick-ups in some heavily-trafficked areas of his district, he contended. This effort between an elected official and the Sanitation Department as well as our ongoing work with local merchants and residentsdemonstrates how close partnerships can make a real difference in keeping a vibrant neighborhood clean. And lets remember that litter baskets are only for pedestrian litter, not for household or commercial refuse.

Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann praised the news.

We are delighted that Councilmember Gentile was able to secure funding in this years budget to restore the greatly needed second basket collection along the commercial corridors in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, she said. Community Board 10 members have advocated for this needed additional collection which will keep our sidewalks neat and clean free from overflowing public receptacles in high pedestrian trafficked areas. I know residents and business owners in the area will welcome the cleaner streets this level of service will bring. Its time to say goodbye to overflowing baskets along the avenues, added Recchia. I was happy to work with Councilman Gentile to make this happen for the people of south Brooklyn.
