Late last week, Brooklyn Federal Court Judge Edward R. Korman sentenced Ronald G. Atkinson for the assault of a correctional counselor while he was incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Atkinson, 40, was arrested in 2009 on charges of bank robberies in Las Vegas and Manhattan. Detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center subsequent to his arrest and pending trial, Atkinson brutally attacked a correctional counselor, striking the counselor repeatedly in the head. The counselor suffered a broken nose, broken bones under his eye and two slipped discs in his neck, in addition to residual and continuing pains including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Because the Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the Metropolitan Detention Center, the attack on the counselor was a federal offense on a federal employee.

“When held to account for his criminal activity that spanned the country, the defendant sought to continue his crime spree within the walls of the correctional institution with his unprovoked and vicious assault on a federal employee,” said United States Attorney for the Eastern District Loretta E. Lynch.

Korman sentenced Atkinson to a term of 151 months imprisonment for the assault, which will run consecutively to the 86 months’ incarceration remaining on Atkinson’s sentence for bank robbery.

“[Atkinson’s ] sentence represents a clear warning to all federal prison inmates that assaults on Bureau of Prisons staff will be met with the full force of the law,” Lynch concluded.
