Good morning. Today is the 199th day of the year. The city’s recent heat wave isn’t anything new. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 18, 1900, revealed that during the past few days, the temperature had reached the high 90s. Seven deaths due to heat prostration were reported — not only was it before air conditioning, it was even before electric fans. Crowds flocked to Coney Island and Prospect Park to get away from the heat, the Eagle reported.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Dion DiMucci (“The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue,” “Teenager in Love”), astronaut John Glenn, singer Martha Reeves of Martha and the Vandellas (“Heat Wave,” “Dancing in the Street’), Brooklyn-born baseball manager Joe Torre and poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
