Brooklyn Today for July 17
Good morning. Today is the 198th day of the year. On this day in 1902, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, a new ice-delivery firm, P. W. Meyers and Son, that had just expanded from Albany into Brooklyn, was being given a hard time by the Brooklyn Ice Exchange, representing the established ice dealers of the borough. Truckers allied with the Ice Exchange were refusing to deliver P. W. Meyers’ ice. In those days, before refrigeration, people relied on daily deliveries of ice to keep food fresh.
Well-known people who were born today include actress Lucie Arnaz, actor David Hasselhoff (“Baywatch”), singer-actress Diahann Carroll (“Dynasty”) and Aaron Lansky, founder of the National Yiddish Book Center.
