Generally Speaking: Two Brooklyn beauties to vie for Miss New York

Who will be the next Miss New York to compete in the Miss America contest later this year? Two contestants vying for the 2013 Miss New York crown are Christina Moore, currently Miss Kings County and Stephanie AccardoMoore, who hailsfrom Bensonhurst, held the Miss Brooklyn title in 2011 and then Miss Verrazano in 2012.Accardo, who rode in the recent Brooklyn American Independence Day Parade, wore the sash of Miss Richmond County in 2012.

Both lovely ladies will be hitting the runwaywith 22 others from across the city and state, on June 12 and 13 at the St. George Theater on Staten Island for the Miss New York state pageant sponsored by the folks who run the big kahuna, the Miss America organization.

Placing the Empire State tiara on the new Miss New York will be none other than last year’s Miss Brooklyn,Mallory Hagan, who went on to become Miss New York and the nation’s current Miss America.This year, the Miss America pageant returns to the boardwalk in Atlantic Cityon September 15, where it all started back in 1921.

Brooklyn Beep Marty Markowitz often has remarked and affectionallycalledsome of his fellow Brooklynites a cast of characters!One such personwe got toknow fairly well was the late Bob DeFonte.We called him the town crier;: others referred to him as the mayor.He was quite a gent, a former Wall Street executive, who in his younger years enjoyed boating.

He would make his daily rounds talking to just about everyone he encountered and always seemed to have a grasp of when new stores were opening or about the latest neighborhood event. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church, worked out at the Harbor Fitness Centerand was an avid reader of this paper, so he told us.

A hearty standing ovation to all the supportersof the 2013 Bay Ridge Relay for Lifewhich includes contributors from Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst.This year’s Relaywas their biggest fundraiser ever,bringing in a record total of more than $205,000on behalf of the American Cancer Society. It also turned out to be one of the best fundraisers for the ACS in all of New York.

Among the newly electedofficers ofthe Civil War Roundtable of New York, is Bay Ridge resident andlocal attorney Mike Connors who also hosts a radio program called Ask the Lawyer.

First things first!Connors was tapped as the CWT’s vice president of operations. His fellow officers for the 20123-2014 term are Marty SmithPaul WeissBud LivingstonHolohanMike Connors recently changed AM radio stations.His weekly Saturday evening talk show at 6 p.m. is now broadcast over two radio outlets, WMCA570 and WNYM970 The Answer.It can also be listened to on-line by clicking on either station while it is being broadcast.
