Sixty-one-year-old Felix Coss was walking north across Broadway along Hooper Street when a marked NYPD van made a left-hand-turn and fatally hit him at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

Coss was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he died. Police report that Coss had the right-of-way and was in the crosswalk, but that the investigation is ongoing and no criminality is suspected.

Neighbors and fellow parishioners at Williamsburg’s Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church said that Coss had just celebrated his 61st birthday on Friday, July 5, and described the Spanish teacher as “soulful” and a beloved community fixture.
