Gonzalez wins DC 37’s endorsement
Two days after she was spurned by the Detectives Endowment Association (DEA) for her votes in favor of two bills cracking down on the New York Police Department’s controversial stop and frisk policy, Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook) bounced back, winning the endorsement of District Council 37, the city’s largest municipal union.
“Sara Gonzalez has been a strong progressive voice on the City Council for the interests of working families, and their communities,” DC37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts said in her endorsement announcement on July 3. “She has always stood with us, fighting for a fair tax structure and to ensure the services that protect our quality of life are preserved. It is our pleasure to endorse her, and we will do everything we can to keep her fighting for us at City Hall,” Roberts said.
The endorsement provided some good news for Gonzalez, who is running for her third and final term in the council. On July 1, the DEA announced that it was revoking the endorsement it had given to her. DEA President Michael Palladino cited the lawmaker’s votes in favor of a bill to establish an inspector general to oversee the NYPD and another bill which would make it easier for citizens to sue the NYPD if they believe they have been unfairly targeted by cops because of their race.
