Fifth graders at P.S. 127 leave legacy with mural

Graduating fifth graders at P.S. 127 got the opportunity of a lifetime this month, working with a professional artist to paint a mural inside the schools auditorium which was unveiled during a special ceremony on Wednesday, June 19.

For the past four weeks students worked with Magdalena Marcenaro, clipping magazines and creating a vision for a mural that will honor them. Scenes from the mural include a rendition of the school, located on Seventh Avenue near 79^th Street, and the views that surround it, including the Gowanus Expressway and the Verrazano Bridge. There is also a yearbook picture of each graduating fifth grader on the wall.

This beautiful mural will be cherished by all of us for years to come, said student Chelsea Nunes.

Jordan Allocca explained that students and staff worked on the mural for an entire day on Monday, June 17, staying in the school building until 5 p.m.

We had stations. One for making collages, one for cutting and one for painting, he said.

It was really fun to participate, said Adam Samakovlis.

It was very cool and fun. We learned about art and beauty, added Natasha Powell.

It was exciting to stay until five, Nunes said.

Marcenaro said that as an artist, its important for her to be linked to a big project and big things such as this.

Its important for us to work together as a group in our schools, she said.

This is what makes childrens school experiences special, said Councilmember Vincent Gentile who attended the unveiling. They will forget about what happens in math class, but they wont forget special shows or murals. Thats what makes our education so rich.

A Home Depot location in Astoria provided discounted items for the project. Marcenaro also donated prints of her original art to benefit the school.
