Brooklyn Today for June 24
Good morning. Today is the 175th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of June 24, 1901, reported that intense summer heat brought an unprecedented crowd of 100,000 people to Coney Island. “Carload after carload” of people descended upon the various railroad stations (the rail lines that were the ancestors of today’s Coney Island subway lines had separate terminals). There was so much crowding in narrow streets such as the Coney Island Bowery, the Eagle reported, that some women began to faint. Long lines formed in front of every ferris wheel, roller coaster, carousel and amusement ride, and food vendors were “swept off the streets by mobs of people who seemed to care for nothing except a drink, a dance and a song.” The beach was also crowded, but there was only one accident — a drunken swimmer almost drowned but was revived by lifeguards.
Well-known people who were born today include musician Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, actress Michele Lee, actor Peter Weller and actress Nancy Allen.
