Good morning. Today is the 172nd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of June 21, 1900, carried an account of the Republican National Convention for that year. Once again, President William McKinley was nominated, but there was a new vice-presidential nominee: New Yorker Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, the governor of New York state and a former NYC police commissioner, was a national hero, thanks to his command of the “Rough Riders” during the Spanish-American War. The following year, Roosevelt became president after McKinley was assassinated.

Well-known people who were born today include cartoonist Berk Breathed, writer-actor Joe Flaherty, singer-songwriter Nils Lofgren, actor Bernie Koppell (“Get Smart”), former baseball player and sportscaster Rick Sutcliffe and Pince William of England.
