Generally Speaking: Cathedral Club welcomes new president

A toast of the bubbly to Martin Cottingham who was just sworn in as the new president of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn at Gargiulo’s in Coney Island by New York State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Graham.Other officers installed were attorney Christopher Hannan as vice president, Vincent LeVien as treasurer, and attorney Mark Cipolla as recording secretary.Continuing as financial secretary is New York State Supreme Court Justice Patricia Di Mango.

Judge Graham also gave the oath of office to the club’s Board of Governors, immediate past President John Heyer IICraig EatonWilliam GuarinelloFrank KeatingJames McHughMichael Perrette and George Prezioso. The club alsoestablished a new Board of Advisors which includes John GilhoolyRobert Charles GoldenMarty GoldenJoseph GuarinelloVincent IannelliMichael Long and Richard Re.

Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio is the spiritual director of the club which was founded in 1900.

The Bay Ridge Community Council held its big annual gala at the El Caribe Country Club in Mill Basin. Former BRCC Treasurer Joseph Sbarra did a first rate job emceeing the bash. During the formal ceremonies, 2012 Teen Idol Fan Favorite Taylor Leigh Cannon sang the National Anthem andFather Archimandrite Gerasimos Makris

New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack swore in the new council officers for the 2013-2014 term.Renee Dorsa was inducted for a second term as president.

Dorsa, in turn, presented the group’s prestigious 2013 Civic Award to banking executive and community activist James McHugh.Mary Ann WalshArlene Keating for her past years of service as council executive secretary.

There was a really big, energized turnout forthe rallyto bring back the B37 Third Avenue bus, held inside Martin Luther Playground, at Second Avenue and 56th Street sponsored by UPROSE, Transit Forward, TWU Local 100 and the Restore the B37 Coalition.

Among the participants were Congressmember Nydia VelazquezMarty Golden and Velmanette MontgomeryJoan Millman and Felix OrtizSara GonzalezTish James and Vinnie GentileBill ThompsonSal AlbaneseJohn Samuelsen.

Robert Kassenbrock

Kassenbrock included Power Point photos of the interior and exterior of local Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as the Bay Ridge Jewish Center and the Bay Ridge Mosque. His talk included tidbits about the history of the religious groups, the building architecture and when the local congregations were established here.

The Society of Old Brooklynites headed by Brooklyn historian Ron Schweiger holds its 133rd Anniversary Celebration Luncheon on Sunday, June 23, at 12:30 p.m., at the Bay Ridge Manor. Daniella RomanoMarty Markowitz will be guest speaker.
