Brooklyn Today for June 14
Good morning. Today is the 165th day of the year. On June 14, 1866, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle ran an article called “The Dress Question.” The article concerned Dr. Mary DeWalker, a Brooklyn resident and physician who, rather than wearing a wide ankle-length skirt as was the custom in those days, wore a straight skirt reaching just below the knees with a pair of trousers underneath. “The vulgar mind, unaccustomed to this sort of thing, makes it inconvenient for Mrs. DeWalker to appear in public,” the Eagle wrote. “Wherever she is seen in the street, a large and excitable crowd follows her, causing annoyance.”
Well-known people who were born today include actress Yasmine Bleeth (“Baywatch”), signer Boy George of Culture Club, real estate mogul and former political candidate Donald Trump, actress Marla Gibbs (“The Jeffersons”) and Hall of Fame tennis player Steffi Graff.
